As we begin a new year, it’s time to consider your travel plans. Well, it’s always time to be planning for travels, but here we look at some new trips and trends that are in the mix from some of our favorite cruise lines and adventure travel companies.

Here we go!

UnCruise Adventures is returning to Costa Rica with its “Pure Life Adventure Cruise.”

I’ve been on several UnCruise expeditions, and I consider these trips the most fun and immersive ways to visit some of the world’s most remote and beautiful locations.

These are excellent options for travelers who really enjoy being active and connecting with nature.

UnCruise’s Costa Rica Adventure Cruise

Route: Roundtrip voyage from Liberia, Costa Rica

Ship: Safari Voyager, 66 passengers maximum

Duration: 7 nights

Activities: Kayak through tropical waterways, hike through dense rainforests and search for wildlife you can't find anywhere else in North America. Travelers will visit expansive wildlife refuges, national parks and secluded bays. This is the best way to see Costa Rica's wild side.

UnCruise's Full Itinerary in Costa Rica

Day 1: Embarkation in Liberia

Welcome to the land of pura vida (pure life)! Upon arrival at Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, cruisers are greeted by UnCruise reps and transferred to the marina. Onboard the Safari Voyager, you'll settle in with a safety presentation, meet the crew, and enjoy a welcome dinner followed by a route talk with the expedition guides.

Day 2: Murciélago Bay

The adventure begins in remote Murciélago Bay, part of Santa Rosa National Park. Accessible only by boat, this area provides opportunities to fully embrace the natural wonders of Costa Rica, far away from crowds. Hikes of various difficulties, water sports and snorkeling will be available. The area is known for its natural beauty, dotted with small islands such as Isla Colorada and Isla San José.

Day 3: Curú Wildlife Refuge

Located at the southeastern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, wildlife in the refuge is abundant and diverse. You can see exotic birds, deer, howler and spider monkeys, as well as frogs, butterflies and even the occasional crocodile. This is a true haven for nature lovers. In the afternoon, there might be time for a beach party or kayaking. The beautiful waters near Isla Tortuga also offer opportunities for kayaking and paddleboarding.

Day 4: Golfo Dulce

Explore one of the world’s only tropical fjords. Golfo Dulce, which is a true biological treasure, is known as a birding paradise. This vibrant tropical Pacific rainforest is home to toucans, hummingbirds and a wide variety of other bird species, hidden among lush tropical vegetation like bromeliads, heliconias and ginger plants. Golfo Dulce, one of only four tropical fjords on the planet, offers incredible biodiversity. You'll have the chance to explore its mangrove forests, some of the healthiest Pacific tropical rainforests in Central America, by kayak and skiff. The lower saline conditions of this “Sweet Gulf” contrast with the Pacific Ocean, thanks to an underwater mountain at its entrance and the heavy rainfall from rivers such as the Rio Esquinas, which feeds one of the largest mangrove systems in the area. As you venture through this botanical wonderland, you'll encounter monkeys, butterflies and more, creating an unforgettable sensory experience.

Day 5: Osa Peninsula

The wild, untouched Osa Peninsula, near Corcovado National Park, is rich in wildlife and considered one of the most biologically intense places on Earth. You can choose to hike along Drake Bay’s rugged coast, keeping an eye out for incredible wildlife including various monkey species, reptiles and colorful birds. Marine life is abundant, as well, and you might even see humpback whales — some of which migrate from Alaska. Enjoy a swim in the river or snorkeling outing, too. Osa Conservation Area is home to Costa Rica’s largest national park, Corcovado.

Day 6: Isla San Lucas National Park and Puntarenas

Discover the captivating history of Isla San Lucas National Park, home to Costa Rica's most infamous maximum-security prison, which operated from 1873 to 1991 after evolving into a model penal colony. The prison’s legacy is immortalized in the internationally acclaimed book La Isla de los Hombres Solos ("God Was Looking the Other Way"), written by a wrongly accused inmate whose story led to an investigation and his eventual release after 30 years. Today, visitors to Isla San Lucas can explore the preserved prison facilities, enjoy easy hikes, kayak along the coast and take in stunning views of the mainland, all within a lush tropical dry forest just five miles from Puntarenas.

In Puntarenas, Costa Rica’s first commercial port and capital of the largest province, you can stroll along the Paseo de los Turistas, a scenic two-mile boardwalk overlooking volcanic black-sand beaches. The city is rich in history, featuring landmarks such as the Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the oldest church in the province, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. Here, you can immerse yourself in local culture, shop, and enjoy a perfect blend of history and natural beauty.

Day 7: Santa Elena Bay

The northernmost stop for the expedition is at Santa Elena Bay, renowned for its rich marine life, including tropical fish, sea turtles and coral reefs. Located in Santa Rosa National Park, one of the oldest ecosystems in the Americas, this area offers pristine white-sand beaches and a variety of water activities. You can kayak, snorkel or hike through the surrounding landscapes. End the day with the captain’s dinner and a farewell photo slideshow to relive the highlights of your week’s adventures.

Day 8: Disembark in Liberia

You also can enjoy a scenic felucca ride (traditional wooden sailing boat) around Elephantine Island; a visit to Abu Simbel, known for its two massive rock-cut temples and the four colossal statues of Ramses II on the outside; and a fascinating visit to the Great Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and falcon god Horus. There is also plenty of free time for independent exploration or shopping in bustling markets.

Evenings are filled with cultural experiences, too, such as a traditional Galabeya (traditional long robe) evening, an unforgettable folkloric belly dance performance onboard and informal cooking classes.

The immersive itinerary concludes in Cairo with cruisers treated to an exclusive private tour of Abdeen Palace, one of the most luxurious palaces in the world, followed by lunch at the palace and a visit to Coptic Cairo, exploring historic sites such as the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue.

The 11-night cruise and land itinerary also includes three nights in Cairo pre-cruise and one-night in Cairo post-cruise, where travelers might stay in either the Hotel St. Regis or Ritz Carlton.

Biking, Hiking and More Destinations with Backroads

Backroads biking trip in France

Backroads has released its list of top trends for travel in 2025 based on bookings coming in to the active travel company. This picture shows our fantastic biking river cruise in Bordeaux, France. (Photo by John Roberts)

Backroads, one of our top picks for favorite active-travel, shared its travel trends for 2025 based on early bookings that it is seeing.

From women-only trips and acoustic (non-electric) bike tours to Portugal’s most intriguing islands and the Alps, the company reports interest that touch a variety of travel styles, ages and locations around the world.

Backroads’ Top Active Travel Trends for 2025

Women-Only Trips

Exclusive adventures just for women — whether traveling solo or with friends, with sisters or multiple generations of female family members — continues to grow in popularity. Backroads says the number of people taking its Women’s Adventures Walking and Hiking Tours will more than double in 2025 compared with 2024. Trending Backroads trips include Ireland Women’s Walking & Hiking Tour and A Taste of Camino de Santiago Women’s Walking & Hiking Tour.

Challenging Mountain Hikes

Hiking is always super popular, and travelers are looking for new epic mountain trails to experience. Backroads is seeing high demand for trips featuring rigorous alpine hiking that allows for more trail time and up-close exploration of a region. Trending Backroads trips include Chile’s Patagonia Walking & Hiking Tours; Italy’s Dolomites Walking & Hiking Tour; Norway’s Lofoten Islands Walking & Hiking Tour and Peru’s Lodge-to-Lodge Trekking Tour.

Go at Your Own Pace in Beautiful Destinations

While some travelers seek challenging treks, others want to explore thrill-worthy destinations at a more relaxed pace, with plenty of options for leisure and cultural pursuits. “Chill seekers” in search of just the right amount of activity paired with stunning natural beauty can savor the journey as they go with these trending Backroads trips: Dolce Tempo easygoing tours in the Canadian RockiesPeruLapland and the Austrian Alps.

Portugal Islands Paradise

The lush landscapes, dramatic coastlines and beautiful beaches of Madeira and the Azores have begun to attract more travelers looking for new off-the-beaten-path destinations. Airlines have expanded their flight schedules, making these gorgeous islands more accessible. Backroads launched trips in the region in 2024 and has doubled departure dates for 2025. Trending Backroads trips here include Portugal’s Madeira Walking & Hiking Tour and Azores Multi-Adventure Tour.

Under-the-Radar Destinations

For adventurous travelers whose theme song is Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere,” the appeal of lesser-known places continues. People looking for travel destinations with well-rounded appeal, unique scenery and premiere accommodations are discovering destinations like BelfastNewfoundland, the Baltics and Tasmania. Trending Backroads Trips: Canada’s Gulf Islands tours; Norway’s Ålesund Multi-Adventure Tour and Australia’s Tasmania Multi-Adventure Tour.

Biking Tour for the Hardcore Cyclist

Traveling by bicycle is one of my favorite ways to experience a region. While e-bikes have become a popular option for many cyclists, Backroads’ new Unplugged Bike Tours (non e-bike trips) are specifically for cyclists who prefer raw pedal power and who enjoy the camaraderie of others looking for the same experience. Backroads offers its Spain’s Mallorca Unplugged Bike Tour.

Chasing Dark Skies & Eclipses

There’s so much to love about the great outdoors after the sun goes down. Eclipse chasing, stargazing and glamping are becoming increasingly popular with travelers. People are drawn to European destinations located within the path of totality during the 2026 solar eclipse. They also love glamping under the stars in locations such as Utah’s Bryce and Zion National Parks. Trending Backroads trips include Iceland Northern Lights Multi-Adventure Tour and Backroads and Under Canvas collaborations in Utah, Yellowstone and South Dakota.

France, as Always, Is in Demand

While tourists from around the world journeyed to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, France, as a whole, continues to be a top European travel destination. From World War II history in Normandy and Brittany to wine tasting and gastronomy in the Loire Valley and cruising down the Seine and Rhône Rivers, France has it all when it comes to active travel. Try the Bordeaux & Dordogne Bike Tour.

Winter Travel Is Heating Up

More travelers are seeking out snowshoeing and winter wildlife-viewing in the snowscapes of U.S. national parks as winter travel continues to increase in popularity. Some people make this their primary travel season. Trending Backroads trips include Chile’s Lake District Walking & Hiking Tour; California’s Palm Springs & Joshua Tree tours and Dolomites Snow Adventure Tour.

Collecting Experiences vs. Things

Travelers are looking for itineraries that prioritize connections to nature, culture and community, and are even giving this immersive experience of travel as gifts. Active travel is a unique experiential activity that creates indelible memories, whether it’s hiking the stunning coastline of Italy’s Cinque Terre, painting traditional oxcarts in Costa Rica or celebrating a milestone birthday with family and friends in the California Wine Country. For families, a special trip can connect generations, bridge geographic distances and provide opportunities to have one-of-a-kind experiences that make the best gift. Trending Backroads trips include Greenland & Iceland Walking & Hiking Tour and Bhutan Walking & Hiking Tour.
